Blogmas Day 6: Newcastle Christmas Market

Hey Guys!

⭐Welcome to Day Six of Blogmas ⭐

I'm obsessed with Christmas, which you can probably tell by now and there is nothing better than visiting a Christmas market! They are the best places to grab a glass of mulled wine, try out different market foods, buy cute little trinkets and get into the festive spirit.

The Christmas lights in Newcastle were turned on the evening of 8th November, and the following weekend the Christmas market opened around Monument. Since then Northumberland Street and Monument have been heaving with people doing their Christmas shopping, looking around the Christmas market and going on the rides that have been staggered on Northumberland Street outside the shops. If you live in Newcastle or near make sure to check out Fenwick's Christmas window display of The Snowman, it is the cutest and they shoot fake snow from the rooftop to make it seem like it is snowing outside ❤

The Newcastle Christmas Market isn't as big as other Christmas markets but they have some great stalls with loads of food and snacks to choose from!

For Arts & Crafts, they have stalls with art pieces, scarfs and hats, little trinkets, stocking fillers and some adorable Christmas decorations like wreaths, reindeers made out of wicker, Christmas lights and cute little Santas. If you are looking for anything in particular for someone who likes arts & crafts then these stalls will be great to check out  ❄

For food and drinks, they have two hot chocolate stands, a few different stalls selling gin and alcoholic drinks. There is a crepe stand, Greek pastries, Chinese food, Mexican food including fajitas, Indian dishes, burger and hot dog joints, a Halloumi Wrap stall, a Spanish stall with chorizo and potatoes on offer and a Yorkshire pudding wrap stand (which I'm desperate to try!)

If you are on a date or want to go get some food with friends instead of going for dinner at a restaurant try going to the Christmas Market instead. There are so many different things to try and for great prices as well!

At the Christmas market, they also have little sweet and dessert stalls selling big trays of Bakewell tarts and raisin and cinnamon buns. There are Nutella and fruit crepes, chocolates, biscuits and pastries. There are also huge sweet stalls doing pick & mix. If you have a sweet tooth beware - it is a dessert lovers haven ❤

Other than hot chocolate stalls doing Cadbury's and Bailey's hot chocolate they also have a cute little bar with benches both inside and outside. Serving hot mulled wine for £3.50 and a variety of other alcoholic beverages this cute little bar will get very busy very fast in the evening. I'll have to make sure I visit when it is a little quieter ❣

That is it for the Newcastle Christmas Market. If you are in the Newcastle area definitely pay a visit, treat yourself to some hot mulled wine, some great food and end it will a sweet dessert ❤

I really want to go to Edinburgh Christmas Market, Nottingham's Winter Wonderland and Sheffield's Christmas Market as they look so festive! And they are the closest to where I am at Christmas ❄

Where is your favourite Christmas market and why?

See you tomorrow for Day Seven of Blogmas

My Answers
What is your favourite thing about Christmas?

Now that I'm 20 years old, nearly 21 my favourite thing about Christmas is going from university back home for three weeks to celebrate the festive season, see all my family, eat way too much Christmas food and have a break from the busy student life ❤ Christmas for me is a time I get to see all of my family, spend quality time together, watch great movies all together, drink way too much prosecco and play loads of family games!
Do you have any Christmas traditions you CANNOT forget about each year?

We recently changed our Christmas tradition again by staying back in England for Christmas when we would normally go away to Lanzarote to celebrate the festive holiday. But one tradition we have is no matter where we plan on spending Christmas we always decorate the house till it looks like Christmas threw up and we always have either a Christmas meal or a Christmas bar crawl with all of my extended family. All of us meet up for the day, have either drinks or a big meal and spend quality time together catching up.

Another Christmas tradition that is very important to our family is wearing either our Christmas jumpers or our Christmas t-shirts. We had personalised t-shirts ordered for us all to wear together on Christmas Day ❤ (you can see them in the photo of the group of us)

Is there a song that just gets you into that Christmas spirit?

There are two songs that always get me in the Christmas spirit! 'All I Want For Christmas is You' by Mariah Carey and 'Last Christmas' by Wham! Whenever they are on, either it is on the radio or in a shop it puts me in the festive spirit straight away. At Newcastle's Christmas lights switch on this year they played All I Want For Christmas Is You and straight away I was singing and bopping! Christmas is one of my favourite times of year and Christmas songs are one of the best parts!

What is your favourite Christmas movie?

My ultimate favourite Christmas movie is The Holiday. Which is hard because I love all Christmas movies, I have a huge list of Christmas movies I HAVE to watch in December. But The Holiday is the actual best Christmas movie. I know a lot of people debate it isn't really a Christmas film like Elf or A Christmas Carol but it is a film I have always watched when the countdown to Christmas begins so it is my all time favourite ❣
Which food is your must-have at Christmas time?

Pigs in blankets and stuffing from the Christmas dinner; then turkey, stuffing and cranberry sandwiches from all the leftover food and the party food we have on Boxing Day! Party food is always the best ❤  I love all the food we have at Christmas!

If you had to choose between Michael Buble’s Christmas album and Justin Bieber’s Christmas album, which one would you choose and why?

Definitely Michael Buble's Christmas album! Justin Bieber's song Mistletoe is a great one, however, his album will never beat that of Michael Buble's ❄ Michael Buble does some classic Christmas tunes and then adds some of his own and I think others can agree that when Michael Buble's Christmas album comes on you know it's Christmas time!

What is your favourite memory about Christmas?

I have so many memories from Christmas that are my favourite, but I have two that are the ones I always remember and look back to. My first memory is when I was much younger, we were celebrating Christmas at my grandparents, all my family were there and my grandma had done the best Christmas spread, there was so much food! I just remember my grandma getting a huge sack full of presents out and putting them in front and me and my cousins and we all sat together on the floor opening all of our presents. My auntie got me Disney Princess pyjamas with my name personalised on them! I got changed into them straight away and there is now a lovely picture of me with all my cousins in the arch of my grandma and grandad's living room with me wearing my new pyjamas  ❤

My second favourite memory is our second year spending Christmas in Lanzarote. Unfortunately, I was really ill with either a bad cold or flu but I spent a lot of it indoors trying to get rid of it, but I remember having cocktails on Christmas Eve in one of our favourite bars, getting ready on Christmas Day with my little reindeer antlers and we had an amazing Christmas dinner! Every night after coming back from having dinner out we would put on a movie and all snuggle up on the sofa with some prosecco, it was such a fun Christmas ❤

When do you start decorating your place for Christmas?

Well because I'm at university until the 15th December we decorate our student house in November so we can make the most of celebrating Christmas together as a house. Then at home, my parents decorate on the 1st December so all the decorations will be up when I'm home for Christmas, but my dad waits till I'm home to put the special ornaments on the Christmas tree 🎄

If you were at Christmas Karaoke, which 5 songs would you choose to play?

Firstly, I love Karaoke so if I was to do Christmas Karaoke you wouldn't be able to take the mike off me! The songs I'd choose are Last Christmas by Wham, Santa Tell Me by Ariana Grande, All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey, Santa Baby by Kylie Minogue and It's Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas by Michael Buble ❄

What are your top 4 Christmas movies?

I love nearly all Christmas movies! Christmas movies and Christmas songs are the two main things that get me into the festive spirit. But the four that are my top choice are How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Holiday, Elf and The Polar Express ❤ If you haven't seen any of these Christmas movies you need to add them to your Must Watch Christmas List because they are some of the best Xmas movies!

What does Christmas really mean to you?

For me, Christmas means family time, food and relaxing! When I was younger it was all about going through the Argos Catalogue and choosing what I wanted for Christmas, but now for me its about spending that special quality time with my parents and the dog, seeing my extended family (even those I've only met a few times), relaxing and doing Christmassy things like going to Christmas markets, drinking mulled wine, finally getting to see my best friend again (after 4 months!) and seeing my friends ❤

How old were you when you stopped believing in Santa?

I actually can't remember when I stopped believing in Santa as it feels like so long ago! I did believe in Santa for a long time though. My parents did such a great job of making Christmas so magical, so that is probably why I believed for so long. My parents would put fake snow in our living room from the fireplace to the Christmas tree and would put boot marks in the snow to show how Santa Clause had come from the chimney to deliver my presents ❤ Thinking about it now, it must have been an absolute nightmare for my mum and dad trying to clean up all that fake snow! But they really did make it a magical Christmas every year, and they still do ⭐

What do you think makes Christmas so magical?

I think what makes it so magical is that it is such a widely celebrated time of year. You go out into the city centre and there are Christmas trees and decorations everywhere, everywhere is selling mulled wine and hot chocolate, Christmas movies are all on the TV and Christmas songs are all being played on the radio. Everywhere you go its Christmassy and I love that everyone gets so excited and happy for the festive holiday!

But I think it is important to remember for some people Christmas is the worst time of year, so we should respect that not everyone wants to celebrate Christmas.

Blogmas Day 1: Christmas Reading List

Hey Guys!

⭐ Welcome to Day One of Blogmas 2018 ⭐

Christmas is a great time of year for sitting in front of the fire with a cup of tea reading a book, especially when it is freezing cold outside! So, to kick off Blogmas I wanted to talk about three books that are on my Christmas reading list. Other than all the Christmas specials and movies to watch there are plenty of books to read as well ❣

If there are any books that you guys recommend for some Christmas reading let me know, I'd love to add them to my list ❤

Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust

Girls Made of Snow and Glass was sent to me back in October and I was so thrilled to finally get to read it. This is the book I'm currently reading, but unfortunately due to deadlines at university and getting all my work completed before the Christmas break I haven't had a chance to read it a lot, which is why I plan on finishing it over the Christmas break while I'm relaxing back home with a mug of hot chocolate sat with the dog.

Plot

At sixteen, Mina's mother is dead, her magician father is vicious, and her silent heart has never beat with love for anyone --- has never beat at all, in fact, but she’d always thought that fact normal. She never guessed that her father cut out her heart and replaced it with one of glass. When she moves to Whitespring Castle and sees its king for the first time, Mina forms a plan: win the king’s heart with her beauty, become queen, and finally know love. The only catch is that she’ll have to become a stepmother.

Fifteen-year-old Lynet looks just like her late mother, and one day she discovers why: a magician created her out of snow in the dead queen’s image, at her father’s order. But despite being the dead queen made flesh, Lynet would rather be like her fierce and regal stepmother, Mina. She gets her wish when her father makes Lynet queen of the southern territories, displacing Mina. Now Mina is starting to look at Lynet with something like hatred, and Lynet must decide what to do --- and who to be --- to win back the only mother she’s ever known…or else defeat her once and for all.

Entwining the stories of both Lynet and Mina in the past and present, GIRLS MADE OF SNOW AND GLASS traces the relationship of two young women doomed to be rivals from the start. Only one can win all, while the other must lose everything --- unless both can find a way to reshape themselves and their story.

So far the book has been so good! The type of book I really enjoy and only takes me a short amount of time to read. It's a shame I haven't had the chance to properly sit down and read it while not stressing about uni work. So, I look forward to finally getting the time to enjoy it.

Amy Snow by Tracey Rees

I received Amy Snow quite a few years ago, started it and then never got past the first 20 pages so this Christmas I want to finally tackle the book (it's quite a big book compared to the other two) and finally have it on the completed pile. Especially as from the first few pages it was so gripping, I just didn't have the time to finish it.

Plot

Left to perish on a bank of snow as a baby, Amy has never known love, never known family.

Reluctantly given shelter at nearby Hatville Court, she is despised by the masters and servants alike.

The beautiful Hatville heiress, Aurelia Vennaway, is Amy's only advocate - she becomes the light of Amy's life, and the centre of her existence.

So when Aurelia dies young, Amy's world collapses. But Aurelia leaves Amy with one last gift.

A bundle of letters with a coded key. A treasure hunt that only Amy can unlock.

A life-changing secret awaits... if only she can reach it.

Books like these are always great when wanting to relax for a few hours in the cosy living room where you can just dive right in!

A Nightingale Christmas Wish by Donna Douglas

I've had this book on my reading pile for years, and by years I mean years! I brought it from Tesco when I was still living back home way before moving to university and I still never got the chance to read it. I always ended up putting it to the side to read something else. So, this Christmas I'm dedicating myself to finally getting round to picking it up and enjoy a Christmas read.

Plot

As Christmas 1938 approaches, the staff at the Nightingale Hospital have their own wishes for the festive season.

Ward sister Frannie Wallace is hoping she won’t have to live through another war like the one that claimed her beloved fiance. But with bomb defences going up all around London, it seems as if her hopes are in vain.

Staff Nurse Helen Dawson wants to find happiness again after the death of her husband Charlie. A handsome stranger seems to offer the chance she wants. But is she looking for love in the wrong place?

Matron Kathleen Fox struggles to keep up morale amongst her nurses as the hospital faces the threat of evacuation. But while everyone else worries about the future of the Nightingale, it’s for her own future that Kathleen truly fears.

As the country prepares itself for war, one thing is for sure – by the time next Christmas comes, nothing at the Nightingale Hospital will be the same again…

This book may sound a bit sat for a Christmas read, but I enjoy reading books like these! Especially when it includes more than one storyline ❤

What is on your reading list for this Christmas? Let me know in the comments below!

See you guys tomorrow for Day Two of Blogmas ❄

One Week In Paris: Photo Dairy | Part Two

Hey Guys!

From my previous blog post, you'll know that I've split the photo diary from my Paris trip into two parts because the first part was getting too long and there were so many photos. So here is part two of our trip to Paris back in June.

Day 4: The Notre Dame

On day four of our trip, we knew we wanted to visit the Notre Dame and some of the surrounding area, so like every morning we went to the local supermarket to get water and breakfast (croissant for me!) and headed towards the metro station.
Notre Dame Cathedral
Arriving at the Notre Dame the queue to get in was huge but we read on loads of travel guides that the queues go down really quickly and they did! We were in the queue for around 5-10 minutes and then we were inside. The inside is actually incredible, and at the time we were going around the cathedral a choir was singing hymns which just made the experience very special. The famous three rose windows were beautiful  and photos do not do them justice!

We booked a time slot to go up to the top of the Notre Dame Towers so we had some time to spare before going back. Going back the way we came we went towards the Saint-Chapelle and La Concierge. We were originally going to buy tickets and do both tourist attractions but we were so hot and desperate for a drink, so we went to a cafe bar and relaxed for a bit (doing all this walking about was so tiring!). The time just seemed to escape from us and we only had a certain amount of time left so we continued to walk and headed towards the Luxembourg Gardens. But what we realised when we got there is that we had already been here before on day two when doing our Rose Line Walk! But we still sat in the gardens getting our lunch from a local cafe and then headed back towards the Notre Dame by passing the famous Pantheon.

Booking a time slot for going on a tour of the Notre Dame Tower was so easy as we just put my phone number in and they text me a reference number and the time of our slot, so all I had to do was show them my text and we got into the queue. You had to walk up quite a few steps just to get to the ticket desk and gift shop but that was nothing compared to getting to the top (a total of 387 steps!). For the Notre Dame Tower, I got in for free like Versailles as I'm a student attending a university in Europe so my dad just had to pay around 8 Euros for his ticket (which was a very good price). My mum hates heights so she didn't come up with us and instead sat in the cafe/restaurant next to the Notre Dame having a drink.
The views from level one of the Notre Dame Tower
You stop several times going up the tower to see the views from different levels. So, this was the first stop. You then walk around to the other side and see the views from that side before going up more steps to the next level.

This was the view from the middle section of the tower looking on to the back of the cathedral where you can see all the gargoyles. There was an elephant gargoyle, pelican, a wizard and then the classic design of gargoyles that typically frighten off and protect those that it guards against any evil or harmful spirits.

This was the view from right at the top of the Notre Dame Tower and you could see the city of Paris! It was so beautiful seeing the top of this beautiful city and seeing the Eiffel Tower, churches and all the architecture ♡

After getting down from the top (which was painful and tiring going back down all those stairs without a break in between) we met back up with my mum in the cafe and had a drink. While we were sat there I did a bit of research on what we could do next before finding somewhere to eat. So, I used Discover Walks Blog to find out what fun things were in the area. After reading through their blog post we decided we would walk towards the Latin Quater and Shakespeare and Company bookshop.

On our way to the Latin Quater my mum suddenly realised her purse was missing, but thankfully the waiter at the cafe bar we'd just been to found it for us. We thought pickpockets might have stolen it while we were walking but luckily it was found and we didn't lose anything out of it. We were very thirsty walking in the sun and after having the stress of losing my mum's purse so we sat down in this little garden and dad went and got us some water.

First, we went to Shakespeare and Company Bookshop but I did a separate post explaining our amazing experience there so if you want to check that out click here

After experiencing what is Shakespeare and Company we walked past the cafe and headed into the Latin Quarter to explore. The Latin Quarter is the left bank neighbourhood in the 5th and the 6th arrondissements, so we explored around the small streets looking at all the cute shops (eyeing up the chocolate places) and found a nice place for dinner. If you are looking for a really nice place to eat in the Latin Quarter I'd definitely recommend Monk La Taverne de Cluny, it had amazing food, drinks and the staff were so friendly!

Day Five: Eiffel Tower

To get to the Eiffel Tower we left our hotel to get breakfast at the local supermarket and then went to the closest metro (Porte de Vanves). We wanted to walk to the Eiffel Tower through the Jardins du Trocadéro, over the Pont d'Iéna and see the Eiffel Tower from a distance and take photos before going up. We tried to get tickets to go up the Eiffel Tower a few days before but there were no timed tickets available anywhere (we probably should have booked them before going on our trip) so we thought we would just go see if we could buy tickets there and see if the queues were really long. Getting off at Trocadéro metro station we walked through the gardens looking at the fountains and taking pictures from the top of the hill and then walked down over the river towards the Eiffel Tower.

When we got to the Eiffel Tower we had to go through security, have our bags checked and then we were in the area to buy tickets and join queues. I was slightly disappointed because the last time I went up the Eiffel Tower you could see the Champ de Mars and could walk from the foot of the Eiffel Tower down the park and gardens, but because of the new security procedures and construction work going on you were boxed in. When we looked about where to get tickets the queues were so long, so we made the decision that instead of waiting in a queue for four hours when we had already seen the amazing views from the top of the Notre Dame we would go and explore and find somewhere nice for a drink.

After going back out through security and into the park we strolled through the gardens and looked at all the flowers (it wasn't like I remember as metal fences were everywhere due to some new construction) but the sunflowers were fully bloomed and they looked beautiful!

After walking through the gardens and taking some photos in front of the Eiffel Tower we carried on walking. We had a drink in a cafe as we were thirsty from the heat and then walked towards our next destination; Les Invalides and the Army Museum. But before reaching there we stopped off for some lunch just before the Army Museum and sat in a lovely park.

I don't have a lot of photos of the walk from the Les Invalides to the Grand Palais/Petit Palais as we were too busy admiring the sights and enjoying the walk in the sun! But we walked around the Musée de l'Armée (Army Museum) which was located within the Les Invalides and headed towards the Pont Alexandre III bridge, which is a very extravagant bridge! We decided to walk this particular way as we were heading towards the Champs-Élysées and wanted to walk down Avenue Winston Churchill and past the Winston Churchill statue (which we couldn't find).

Once we came to the bottom of the  Champs-Élysées we slowly walked up and explored past all the car and luxury brand shops.
Champs-Élysées pavement leading up to the Arc de Triomphe
Walking up the Champs-Élysées was so interesting seeing all the luxury brand shops like Louis Vuitton, Abercrombie and Fitch (who has entrance gates) luxury restaurants and then your other branded stores like Adidas and H&M (it reminded me a lot of Oxford Street in London). When you get to the Arc de Triomphe there are so many people everywhere taking photos so it took us a while to find the underground entrance to go underneath the roundabout and come out underneath the Arc de Triomphe.

The Arc de Triomphe
When we walked around the Arc de Triomphe and were taking photos, looking at all the names inscribed on the walls we noticed that a ceremony was taking place near the Unknown Soldier. Individuals were wearing army and pilot uniforms taking photos, so I think something important was taking place, it was nice to see a celebration going on.

The Unknown Soldier from World War I and the Eternal Flame
The Unknown Solider symbolises all of those that died in battle fighting for their country in World War I.

After leaving the Arc de Triomphe we got on to the metro and got off at the metro station Concorde. Walking through the Tuileries Garden located between the Louvre and the Place de la Concorde we headed towards the Louvre to find somewhere for a drink. We walked past the City Hall and went to a lovely bar/restaurant and relaxed in there before going back to our hotel and getting takeaway pizzas from the restaurant next door (they were so good!)

Because we visited Paris in the summer the sun didn't go down until around 10:30pm every night, and as most nights we were already back at our hotel after having dinner so we weren't able to get good shots of the Eiffel Tower illuminated up close but we did get some shots through the trees from our hotel

Day Six: Last full day in Paris

For our last day of the trip, we decided it would be a good idea to not do too much as we were already pretty exhausted from all the walking around and hectic itinerary, so we made our way slowly over to Montparnasse and the Sacre Coeur. I visited the Sacre Coeur when we came to Paris on a school trip in year 8 but we weren't allowed to go inside, therefore, this time I was determined to get to see inside! The walk up the hill was a challenge and a half especially in 30-degree heat but we did it and after queuing for a very short time we got inside. The inside was incredible, there was also mass currently taking place so while we walked around you could observe mass and hear those taking part in the service sing.

I didn't take any photos inside as mass was taking place and they kindly asked if we would refrain from taking photos (that didn't stop some people though). Going around the Sacre Coeur was incredible, the architecture inside is beautiful! Like at Versailles some other visitors were so rude and even though they kindly asked not to take photos (nevermind using flash) people just went ahead and did it anyway. You could go up to the dome and view the panoramic views from the top but I'd already been up to the Notre Dame and my dad and I didn't want to leave my mum at the bottom on her own (she is afraid of heights).

After looking at the views from the top of the hill we headed over to the funicular lift (we weren't going to attempt walking down the hill) and got back down to the bottom. Next on our itinerary was the Moulin Rouge, lunch and then the Galerie Lafayette for a shopping experience.

We walked down some of the cutest little streets in Montparnasse, we stopped off at a lovely bar on this small street and it was a lovely place for a rest and some people watching. After relaxing for a while in the bar I got my map out and we started walking to the Moulin Rouge which wasn't very far away. When we got to the Moulin Rouge we were pretty disappointed just because we expected more of a flashy extravagant exterior, but to be fair we didn't go and see a show or anything so we can't make a judgment based on the outside.

After looking at the Moulin Rouge we continued walking down the street and found a lovely restaurant for some lunch, trying some classic French dishes. The next thing on our agenda was the Galeries Lafayette French department store. I thought I was following the right direction on Google Maps but I was taking us all completely the wrong way, so dad had to take charge of getting us there haha!

The Galeries Lafayette had part of its store opposite with a red carpet. We didn't manage to get any decent photos of the department store from the outside that gave it justice but we got some photos from the inside!

There were so many floors and the one floor with Louis Vuitton and Chanel you had to be invited in past the black rope to be allowed to view what was available to buy.
The ceiling in the Galeries Lafayette was something else! The interior decor for this department store beats any of the other stores I've been in!
I couldn't afford much in the shop as a lot of it was highly expensive designer clothing but I did buy a notebook and postcard of Paris (I actually hoard notebooks and even if I don't need one I will buy it anyway haha!) which was a good price as it was in the sale!

When leaving the department store we crossed over the road and saw that the Paris Opera House was opposite.

After admiring the Paris Opera House we carried on walking and ended up in this really fancy bar but the drinks were a really good price considering Paris prices! When looking at the map we noticed that one of the restaurant/bars we had been to before was close by, so we decided we would go there for our last dinner in Paris. We sat on the terrace as it was a lovely evening and they are a very popular place so it was full of people inside! I ordered a spaghetti carbonara for my last evening meal and it was pretty good (but very different from the spaghetti carbonara I've had before).

Day Seven: Heading Home

We checked out of our hotel after making sure we had packed everything and said goodbye to the amazing staff at the Hotel ibis Paris Porte de Brancion Parc des Expositions. Then walked to the end of the street to catch the tram back to the metro stop Cité Universitaire to get our RER tickets and the RER B train back to Charles de Gaulle Airport. Charles de Gaulle isn't our favourite airport as it is so big and confusing to get around (we are used to flying from East Midlands or Birmingham) but the signs around the airport were great so we managed to find our gate without losing anybody haha!

So that was our week trip to Paris, France ❤

I hope you enjoyed the photo diaries and the details of what we got up to on our trip! I'll be uploading a post soon on tips and recommendations for those who are travelling to Paris too!

See you soon ❣
