Monthly Music Playlist // June

Hey Guys!

It has been a while since I uploaded any sort of content or posts on my blog.  I took a break from blogging to focus on my dissertation and university work, as I'm a final year student and had a lot of work to complete over the last few months! But now I'm back (not sure for how long) and have a few posts lined up for the next few weeks so, hopefully, I'll get the motivation to start blogging again and get back into the swing of things ❤

Podcast of The Week: Dirty John

Hey Guys!

It is officially Easter break for university students like myself and that means a break from dissertations and essays - FINALLY! The last few months have been stressful and hectic, so I'm glad to be getting back into blogging over my Easter break ❤

I'm back this week with another Podcast of The Week review! If you are a fan of podcasts look out for my Podcast of The Week blog posts in future as I'll be sharing details and reviews of all different types of podcasts from true crime, positivity and happiness to comedy and music ❤

This week is about the podcast Dirty John! 

Dirty John 

Dirty John is a Wondery podcast hosted by Christopher Goffard from the L.A Times. The podcast details the story of Debra Newell and John Meehan's short love story from deception, to manipulation and finally to death. Each episode details parts of the story, from how Debra and John met, to marriage and family conflicts and details on just how far John Meehan would go to get what he wanted, hurting not just one person but multiple. 

I started listening to Dirty John on Spotify after my housemate was telling us about the podcast and how crazy the story is, and then another friend recommended the series Dirty John on Netflix. So, I thought I'd start with the podcast first and then move on to the drama series. There are only six episodes detailing John Meehan and Debra Newell's story but there are a few bonus episodes talking with the cast from the Dirty John drama series which I found really interesting as well. 

Normally when I discuss podcasts I highlight episodes that I favoured, but with this podcast, each episode ties into each other and it is hard to pick a favourite when it's all the same story. Instead this week I'll just be discussing the entire podcast. 

When I first started listening to the podcast I was intrigued to find out what John Meehan could have done to be nicknamed Dirty John but as you listen on the story gets crazier and crazier! You'll find yourself stopping and listening intently to what is happening. In the podcast, you hear Debra, her daughters, John's sister and people who knew John Meehan re-tell the story and go into depth about the experiences they had to go through while John was in their lives. You'll find yourself captured by their stories.

When you listen to the first episode you get a slight confusion as it begins with a coroners report of a dead body and at first you are confused to who it could be and how it ended in such a violent death, but then by the last episode everything makes so much sense and all of your curiosity and questions are answered. John Meehan comes across as a charismatic, charming gentleman but as the story unfolds you are surprised to what lengths he will go to, especially if he doesn't get his own way. By listening to Dirty John you realise that you think you know someone when really they could be deceiving everyone around them. By listening to Debra you get the impression that she must have been so naive to stay with John even after the countless times he threatened her and lied to her, but John Meehan was a master of manipulation and as you hear her narrative about their time together you begin to understand why she would be so naive. There are times throughout the podcast where you find yourself getting so frustrated with Debra, especially when it becomes so obvious the type of person John is but once you hear her story and the relationships she had had in the past you feel sympathy. 

When you hear Debra's daughters recollections of the events that took place between October 2014 to August 2016 you realise what one person can do to a family and how one man can affect the relationship you have with your mother. I think by having Jaqueline and Terra (Debra's daughters) narrate their part of the story on the podcast made it so much more real and captivating as a listener. By the end of episode 6, you are left shocked at the outcome and how everything escalated so quickly (I won't give any spoilers!), you'll want to go and find out more from the reports!

Christopher Goffard is the one who reported on the case that is John Meehan for L.A Times. He hosts and narrates the show telling the story in such a compelling way where from the first episode you are drawn in. I was able to finish the whole podcast in two days and then went on to watch a documentary to find out even more details about the true crime case. I'm a huge fan of true crime podcasts so it wasn't surprising that I found the podcast so interesting!

Podcast Of The Week: (Blank) With Friends

Hey Guys!

I haven't talked about a podcast on my blog for a while now, so I wanted to introduce a new segment where every week I share the podcast I'm currently loving and my favourite episode I've listened to that week. From previous blog posts, you'll know that I'm a huge fan of podcasts and I'm always listening to something new and I'm always searching for something different to tune into ❣  

So this week I'm kicking it off with (Blank) With Friends!

(Blank) With Friends

I stumbled upon (Blank) With Friends only recently. Normally I find the podcasts I listen to by scrolling through the various genres on both iTunes and Spotify but this time I clicked on a few mini video snippets of the podcast on Instagram and then went and checked the episodes out on Spotify. 

(Blank) With Friends is a fairly new podcast to Spotify with their first episode going live on 6th March 2019 and they have uploaded two episodes since, the first one featuring Jessica Sappington and the second episode featuring Samuel Larsen. They discuss topics from Starbucks, creative passions, social media, friendships to female empowerment. The difference with this podcast is that it isn't scripted so the conversation just flows from one random topic to the next. 

The podcast hosts Mike and Jordan are great! They are able to talk in depth about particular important topics but are also able to joke around and make light of situations like "punching phones" and Steve Irwin memes. On each episode they get a friend on who is pursuing something fun and has exciting things going on in their life to share, such as Jessica' female empowerment program and Samuel's music and acting career. 

The vibe between the hosts and their guests is so good as well, it reminds me of the type of conversations I have with my close group of friends when you are sat there and talk for hours about everything and anything. 

The first episode with Jessica Sappington was an amazing and by amazing I mean AMAZING discussion focusing on female empowerment, our obsession with Instagram and how women feeling like they aren't good enough breaks her heart. Jessica has been focusing on stopping females from comparing themselves on social media and empowering women to feel strong. Which as a female myself is something so energising to listen to, especially as I've been one to compare myself to others on social media and goes through not feeling good enough ❤

Jessica's episode was so uplifting hearing such positivity around women's body image and our strength as a "female warrior", whether it be physical strength or mental strength. However, my favourite episode for this week was Episode Two...

Ep. 2 - Put That In The Pile of Things We Don't Eat

The episode I listened to this week featured Samuel Larsen, the musician, actor and performer who is known for featuring on Glee as Joe Hart and is starring in the movie After out on April 12th here in the UK. 

This week's episode focused on topics of discussion I find really interesting and enriching! Such as our engagement with social media, being creative, music, being a people-pleaser and our relationships with other people. 

For me listening to Jordan, Mike and Sam talking about such topics that I can really relate to makes me stop and think about what they were really saying. I was actually cleaning the kitchen when I first started listening to episode two and I had to stop and properly listen as Sam made some great points. For example, we always look at what our friends are doing on Instagram, where they are going out and who they are with comparing who is doing better than who, (which is a topic I actually wrote an article on for BBold Magazine about how on social media we are always trying to prove we are our best lives and comparing ourselves to others). The conversation between the three of them made me stop and think about what they were discussing which for a podcast proves how engaging it is for a listener like me!  Samuel also goes on to talk about that way we used to deal with boredom when we were younger and without social media - how we would fill our time being creative. So, when I was younger and I was bored I would write so many stories and fill journals full of little story lines but now that we have social media we don't fill our time with creativity but instead, we scroll through Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Until someone says it though you never actually realise how the younger generation today is surrounded by social media platforms from the moment they are old enough to hold a phone, but we grew up building and creating things. The conversation between the three of them sparked so many different thoughts about my own interaction with social media - which is what I love! A podcast that gives me such a realisation are my favourites ❤

I think Jordan and Mike are great to be discussing such a broad range of topics that aren't just fixed to one debate. They are discussing just a wide range of issues and points it's uplifting and refreshing to hear!

Favourite Podcast of The Month: David's Out For A Good Time

Hey Guys!

I've been listening to some great podcasts this week, but I'll have to share them in my next Monthly Favourite Podcasts post next month as in this post I'm focusing on one podcast in particular which I've been enjoying a lot these past few weeks! ❤

David's Out For A Good Time

David's Out For A Good Time is a newish podcast which came about in September (unfortunately I didn't discover it until October so I had a few episodes to catch up on!) and has since released an episode every week with a variety of celebrity guests discussing topics from new and old music, to mental health and cameo appearances in movies. There is such a variety of guests and topics to discuss it doesn't disappoint! 

David Olshanetsky and Naledi Dube are great hosts, as they discuss current pop culture topics, Twitter discussions and men. You can't help but relate and laugh.  They also give advice on LGBTQ+ issues such as relationship struggles, dating someone who isn't out yet or general advice sharing their own experiences.  

A great segment they have on the podcast is 'Coming Out Stories' where listeners of the show can send in their stories about how they came out as gay, bisexual, pansexual or didn't need to in some cases. It is a great segment where other listeners can either relate to or hear other people's coming stories. Every week someone new talks about how they came out and the experience behind it. 

Favourite Episodes

My favourite episodes have been Courtney Act, MNEK, Professor Green and William. I watched Courtney Act on Ru Paul's Drag Race and The Bi Life and as someone who is quite well known amongst the LGBTQ+ community it was a great episode listening about her new plans, moving to London and having moved to Los Angeles a few years ago from Australia. I learnt a lot more about her, that I didn't know before. 

 Professor Green's episode was such an interesting one where he discusses his new music with Rag'n'Bone Man and the documentaries he has been doing. He was a great celebrity guest to listen to, especially as I feel a lot of people can relate to him especially having dealt with mental health and depression. 

MNEK I'm a big fan of, especially loving his collaboration with Hailee Steinfeld, and William I know from season four of Drag Race which I haven't watched properly (I skipped to season 6). William speaks a lot about Ru Paul, tension and the drama surrounding him and other Drag Race stars, which was entertaining to listen to as I'm a huge fan of Ru Paul's Drag Race and love to hear some tea! 

This podcast is my favourite to listen to when I'm in the shower and when I'm getting ready for university in the mornings, I'm always laughing in the shower and doing my makeup listening to David and Naledi ❤

I recently got the opportunity to speak to David about his podcast and about how the idea for David's Out For A Good Time all came about. So, below are the questions I got the chance to ask and David was kind enough to answer: 

How did ‘David’s Out For A Good Time’ all begin? 

I created a pitch presentation and took it to Spotify. I was very lucky they enjoyed it and after shooting a pilot in July we retooled it. That shows how long it took for it to come out.

You have some great celebrity guests on your podcast such as Country Act, MNEK, Professor Green, do you get to choose who comes on to the podcast?

We’ve had guests who I’m friends with, guests who’s management we’ve asked and guests who have asked themselves to be on. It’s probably the most stressful element of the show because until they’re sat in that studio anything can happen.

 If you could have any one feature on the podcast who would you choose? And what questions would you be dying to ask? 

I’ve mentioned Halsey loads and we’ve tried (and are still trying) so hard to get her on! I’d love to just discuss her upbringing, her music, creativity and more.

I personally listen to your Spotify playlist ‘David’s Bops and Bangers’ a lot, what is your ultimate number one song to listen to at the moment? 

I’m loving Hurts Like Hell by Madison Beer.

 In episode two of your podcast series you discuss social media, specifically Instagram. Do you think that social media is a positive or negative influence on Generation Z?

 I think because the majority of Generation Z either came of age or had it already as a part of our lives in a major way by that time, it’s difficult to decide because it’s all we’ve ever known. However, with that in mind, I’m certain it hasn’t made life harder for myself and I imagine many would say the same.

There is a section on the podcast where listeners tell their coming out stories, for those individuals who want to come out but need some courage and advice what would you say to them?

 I think that before you can say it to anyone else you need to be able to say it to yourself and to make sure that you give everyone time to adapt - because it took you time to accept yourself and they deserve the same amount of time.
